"Falling in love with the stories in other people's heads"

Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan

First. I don’t usually fall for covers because I’ve been fooled. So for me, as long as covers are good quality (because quality shows effort) I’m good! But this cover right heeerrreee???!! *fans self* Y’all, how fine is this man?? How. Fine. Is. This. Man? I mean dayum.

But anyways, moving past the cover, I was definitely intrigued by the premise of the book. A young woman who is caught in between two men, both superstar athletes. What’s a girl to do? But this book was beyond that. Waaay beyond.

Here we have the story of Iris and August. A chance meeting at a bar the night before the National Championship game randomly brings these two together. But neither could have imagined the things that would follow and how their lives would be irrevocably changed forever.

For Iris, a strong, free willed, career-focused college senior, meeting August ignited something she couldn’t see coming. When things are dark, he’s her light. For August, being the star basketball player of his team, groomed for the NBA, the chance meeting with Iris is something that changes him. There’s just something about her that he can’t let go. He doesn’t just want her, he needs her. If soulmates exist, they’re it. But life circumstances have created major barriers that even the strongest bonds can’t overcome.

Thoughts:

This is my first Kennedy Ryan book and I can already tell that I’m a fan. The writing style and storytelling are top notch! She gave me a Nia Forrester vibe, and I love me some Nia!!

I first thought this would be a typical sports story (which I’m a fan of!) but this was more than that. I started reading it and went to bed at 6a and still couldn’t finish it!! I could not put it down. I loved Iris because she was strong. She made poor choices on somethings but she didn’t let those things hold her back. She continued to persevere. And I loved August because of his persistence, patience and loyalty. He fights for Iris more than she even fights for herself at times.

I loved these characters. And what I liked about the story is that it felt real. So many times we read these stories with happily ever afters, and this wasn’t it. There were a lot of f*cked up moments. And while I didn’t like that it happened, I recognized that this sh*t happens. And so I loved the rawness and realness of the story.

I highly recommend and am looking forward to the upcoming follow ups!

***I do have to give a trigger warning! There is rape. If you are opposed to reading and/or sensitive to these terrible circumstances and descriptors, please read with caution.
