Sweatpants Season by Danielle Allen

The cover alone should make you check this one out!! But on the real, the story is AWESOME! Enjoyed every moment!

Lemme just say this, the cover ALONE is reason to check this one out!

But in all seriousness, I was super excited to see Danielle Allen was dropping a new one! You may or may not have noticed but here at Ashley Reads Books, Danielle Allen is a highly recommend author! So I knew that this book was gonna have some juice!

Sweatpants Season focuses on Akila Bishara (like Akeelah and the Bee!), a freelance journalist, full-time feminist, and all around true to self kinda girl. She’s passionate and driven about her writing and has major goals for herself. She’s all for the empowerment and equal rights of women but not in that, burn bras, stop shaving kinda way. She’s believes in equity (as we all should!) and she’s in no way a bystander. Akila is for sure and upstander! She’s the one who stops dancing when they play R. Kelly! Know what I mean?

Like any true love story there a guy! His name is Carlos Richmond. He’s just as passionate about his goals as Akila is, but he views things differently. He doesn’t disagree with Akila but I think that when you hold a privileged identity (big words here!) you tend to miss the things that objectify and oppresses others. And Akila is not down with that!!

Can this opinionated writer get along with the uber sexy, deep, passionate, beard-gang member, gray sweatpants wearing brotha? I mean he is fine but a girl has to have her standards, right??

Danielle Allen books are always a joy to read! This one is no different! I recently read another book that I didn’t really like by another author and I felt it was because it lacked imagination. But with Danielle, you always get that! You get these sassy, smart, imperfect, vulnerable and strong women that you connect with. And through this character development you get to know the characters deeply! And so I loved the characters! I loved that it was only from one perspective, I loved how passionate they were about their work and each other, and I understood the bumps in the road! I really really enjoyed this book and highly recommend!
