Wonder by Christina C. Jones

Hello! Happy New Year all!! Hope 2019 has been treating you well! So far, mine has been pretty chill. I’ve still been reading books and all, but have definitely neglected my site. I’m going through a mental revamping of it, but I just had to review this book! To be honest, although I’ve read A LOT of fire books, I just haven’t felt that innate desire to do a full on review. I was in a slump y’all! But then Christina C. Jones (my Black writer fairy godmother) came out with Wonder!

Y’all, I just loved it. And in some ways I don’t know what it is, but then I do know what it is…is the combo factor. I have been and have always been a huge fan of two genres…romance and science-fiction. More specifically, the post apocalyptic, vampires, werewolves etc. So y’all already know I love me some romance; specifically Black romance. But to add that with the sci-fi piece? LOVE! The last Black sci-fi/romance author that I remember reading was L.A. Banks (RIP) who had a loooong series. Her books were awesome y’all. (If this is your thing, check her out. They’re probably not on Kindle cause it was that long ago, but her books were fire!) Back to Wonder! Now let me tell you about this story (without giving it away! ugh! so hard!) This is a post-apocalyptic story. So imagine, ish went down, the world fell apart, and now we’re all that left. The story goes, there are three areas that the world has been broken up into; “The Rich”, the “We’ll be alright as long as follow the rules”, and the “Dangerous Hood”. Our lead heroine is Alyson aka Aly. She’s living in the middle; “We’ll be alright as long as follow the rules”. Life has been rough for Aly. The world she lives in is dangerous an all accounts. She even has to deal with food insecurity! They have rations y’all!! And as the head of household to a sick grandmother and teenage sister, everything falls to her. Until one day her whole world get rocked! Everything she thought she knew, isn’t as real as she thought it was. And she’s going to realize she’s more of a badass than she thought!

Now of course in every saga there’s a man. In this one, its a tatted, long hair don’t care, dark skinned bad mama jamma named Maddox. Let’s just say, Maddox is that dude. He’s all perceptive but can beat somebody’s ass. He’s all tender in all the right ways, but rough…y’all, Maddox is BAE.

Thoughts:Overall, I really really enjoyed it. I’m reading over my favorite parts. There are a multitude of characters and personalities that you will love! Dee and Dem (the Twins!) were hilarious! I love that CCJ went in a different direction and came up with a really magical experience for the reader! I love romance, and I love sci-fi! Sci-fi usually has one black person *cough* hunger games *cough* Harry Potter. But in this one, as in all of my Black reads, I didn’t have to wonder (pun intended) if the characters were Black. And I can’t front, like I don’t prefer my stories to be about Black folk! So for one of my top 3 fav authors to put these two together was awesome! I highly recommend! Even for folks who aren’t into sci-fi because its not all techy or deep in the minutia of details of this new world. You will not get lost or bored! Trust me! No read regrets here!
