Tell-Tall by Danielle Allen is one of those books that’s has you up late at night knowing good and well you have to get up early to go to work the next day. Its truly a love story.
Now I followed the directions at the beginning of the book and reacquainted myself with Edgar Allen Poe’s original story The Tell-Tale Heart. And honestly, before you read this book you should too! Just do what I did and go to wikipedia! I’ve read the story before and I just needed to remember the details. And if you do, this book will make a bit more sense to you. So go read EAP’s story real quick and get back to this!
Now this story, which Danielle accurately describes, is a “contemporary romance novel”. It’s a true love story that gets you all in your feelings about friendships, romance, passion, trust and so much more. It gives you that “deep in your heart” kinda love. That, ” we’re gonna be together foreva” kinda love.
This love story features two dynamic characters; True Hart and Noah Perry. Told completely from True’s point of view, the story tells us of a 12 year long friendship that builds into romance. The story starts off with True on the day of her high school graduation. Her brother Sadiq and his best friend Noah, come home from college for True’s special day. Going tit for tat as usual, Noah and True have what we all know is a “moment”. Y’all know what I’m talking about. Those moments when we look for too long, hug for too long, pause for too long, are silent for just a moment too long. And it was on that day, that the dam was opened. Because for a moment, she wondered, “what if?”
From there we go on a 12 year adventure, of life and dating other people, of being each other’s best friends while in relationships and being “in love” with other people. Until one day, you’re just like, you know what? I’m done. I’m done frontin, I’m done faking, I’m done holding back. So what do you do when you’re in love with your best friend? Your brother’s best friend? One of the people in this world you just can’t live without? And how did you get through 12 years of holding back? This story will take you on that rollercoaster. That crazy bumpy wild ride where part of the fun is getting to the top!
As always, Danielle Allen is a phenomenal story teller. She gets you all wrapped up in the story and their emotions and feelings. You root for them! I felt like True was my homegirl and I just wanted her to win! Noah and True’s love story is really beautiful and I enjoyed the way it was inspired by Edgar Allen Poe. You can tell that Danielle is a thinker! And this story takes the reader on a wild ride!
The one thing I will say is, that at the end I was in this moment of “I get it, they’re in love!” You know what I mean? Like all right folks, get a room, you’re in love, we get it! That was my only quirk! lol. Overall, great read!
